Can you think of anything bad that might happen on a road trip? Flat tire? That happened to us on a dirt road in Glacier National Park a hundred miles from anywhere. Getting lost due to poor directions? In New York, Siri took us on a shortcut through a pond that added nearly an hour to our drive. What about a time zone problem? We crossed into Arizona for Pipe Springs National Monument and ended up getting there an hour early due to daylight savings. And all three of those things happened on the first day of our trip to Disneyland.
Mom has been planning this one for a long time, and she wanted everything to go perfectly, since Dad isn't a big fan of anything in California. On Sunday afternoon, it did. We drove down to Las Vegas and stayed the night with the Pooles. Then after breakfast and some dancing, we started early for Anaheim. The Angels game didn't start until 7:30, but we wanted to beat the Memorial Day traffic back into Los Angeles. Well, we didn't beat the traffic. We got slowed way down and had several moments of stopping as soon as we crossed the border into California. So when the map offered to shave 14 minutes off our drive with a shortcut, we decided to try it. Of course, it added a solid 45 minutes, putting us even further behind.
We always have fun hanging out with the Pooles. |
We finally made it into our hotel around 5:30. Dad wanted to leave for the game by 6:30, even though it is only 12 minutes from our hotel to the stadium. Around 6, Dad got bored of sitting in the hotel and checked the game lineups. There in black and white, it was clear. The game started at 6:30!
We hustled out the door, but in the traffic, we barely got parked. We rushed as quickly as we could into Angels Stadium, holding our hats in our hands during the national anthem. We were almost seated for the first pitch. We didn't even miss it when the first Angels batter slugged a homerun off the Yankee pitcher! Unfortunately, that was the last good thing that happened in the game. The Yankees ended up winning 5-1.
Mom was excited to be back in Angels Stadium. |
We love baseball games! |
This is Jo Adell who we watched play at the Bees stadium in SLC. |
It was a fun game despite the Yankees winning. |
The last happy event before the car had a flat tire! |
As we left the stadium Mom heard a rhythmic thumping. She thought we might have a low tire, but the pressure seemed fine. Still, there was a definite metallic thunk as we rolled along. Dad got out at a light and spotted a 4 inch chunk of steel in the front tire. The screw was still holding it in place so the leak was slow, but it would definitely be flat soon.
We got the van back to the hotel, and with much muscle and muttering, Dad borrowed some tools and put the spare on. It was far too late to find a place open to fix it on Memorial Day, so we had to hope for a better day tomorrow.
