What the . . . Hail?

In August we had a massive hailstorm. Dad was driving home from work when the neighbor texted, "Are you guys, ok?" At first, that didn't make sense, but as he drove down Pioneer Crossing, the storm came east. The hail stones were mostly the size of quarters, and visibility dropped to zero. Dad got off the main road and pulled under a tree. The car was mostly undamaged.

At home, it was a different story. The hail was even larger, and there were some stones as big as golf balls. The boys rushed out to save the chickens by shutting them in the coop. Then we watched through the windows as our property was hammered.

The hail was crazy!

The pieces of hail were huge!

Mom was SO SAD about her garden.

The hail destroyed our bench.

There were ripped leaves everywhere.

When the storm finally eased, the garden looked like it had been weed-whacked. The trees were tattered and leaves were everywhere. The piles of hail were drifted up to 8 inches deep along the house. The screens were shredded, and there was roofing grit by the bucketfuls on the sidewalk and driveway. Though many of our neighbors had flooding, our house was high enough to avoid any leaking in the basement. We immediately set out to clean up as best we could.

Over the coming weeks, we filed a claim with insurance. Dad started repairing the shattered fence and rail caps, and we contracted to redo the roof, the shed, and replace the screens. We were grateful that most of the damage was covered by insurance, and almost everything was fixable or replaceable. But we never want to live through a storm like that again!

The new roof looks amazing!

The screens were in need of change.

Dad built a new, much bigger and more solid chicken coop.

He also repainted everything outside!
