Evanston Day 1

After we got the house interior painted (except the bedrooms and kitchen), we really needed to squeeze one last vacation out of summer. Luckily, we had planned to go to Evanston and write about day trips on the website. This would be a three day excursion, and since none of us had spent any time in Evanston, we did quite a bit of research.

On Monday, we left about 1 o'clock. Around 3 pm, we pulled up at the Uinta County Museum in Evanston. It was a small museum, but the boys were really excited to do the simple scavenger hunt. We grabbed a couple copies and got right to it. There were two levels to the museum, which was built in the old library, and we found the required 16 objects in about 45 minutes. Seth was pretty excited for the small pink ball with a smiley face on it that he earned. He named it Pinky.

Mark making an important phone call.

Dad speaking with the clerk.

We also wanted to check out Bear River State Park, which is famous for its bison. There are only a few, but several of them are white, just like the one featured on the flag of Wyoming. They also had three massive bull elk that posed inside the fence for photographs. Along with the captive animals, they have a lot of habitat for wild animals. We were really hoping to see a moose or a fox, but we settled for a few leopard frogs, a garter snake, and some fun birds. We spotted a nighthawk and some goldfinches. There was a red-tailed hawk, and even a kingfisher. We really liked the trails, even though they were short.

The Visitor Center had some great displays of animals.

We walked on a few fun bridges.

Looking for frogs everywhere.

We were very green!

It was a pretty park!

We found bunch of cool frogs.

The nighthawk

Some pretty big elk.

Can you see the white buffalo?

By then, it was time for dinner. We chose a Mexican place, and only Seth chose spaghetti. We didn't care, because he ate every bit, along with the side of fries. Everyone did really well with their meals.

I don't know if you can tell, but these plates are WAY bigger than we imagined.

Later that evening, we went back to the state park in hope of seeing that elusive moose. This time we didn't see much other than mighty swarms of mosquitoes. We enjoyed the walk, but it was definitely punctuated by slaps and swats. Still, it was a good way to start our final trip of the summer!

More fun bridges.

We loved visiting, but hated the bugs!

So many great spots to see a moose, but we never found one.

These three are the best adventurers.

The elk were standing up when we came back.

And so were the bison.
